A Study on Psychological Strain in Menopausal Women

Kee Baik-Seok
Abstract
Menopause is the term often used to describe the period when, as a result of estrogen deficiency, menstruation ceases, and symptoms resulting from vasomotor instability and vaginal atrophy ensue. The association between menopause and psychologic
symptoms is one of the most contentious issues in research on women's health. The relative contribution of estrogen deficiency to these symptoms versus the impact of the psychosocial milieu of the individual women remains a topic of intense
debate.
Psychologic strain were studied with STAI(State-trait Anxiety Inventroy) and BDI(Beck Depression Inventory) on the emotional status of postmenopausal women who will estrogen replacement therapy. Also we compared the degree of anxiety and
depression
according to each factors of demographic data. The data were obtained from 80 postmenopausal women who visited in menopause clinic at the Hospital of Chung-ang University from March, 1995 to July, 1995.
@ES The results are as follows:
@EN 1. In the menopausal women, according to duration of menopause, BDI was significantly decrease in the advanced ages(P<0.001), but not in STAI.
2. There were no statistically difference in BDI & STAI between symptomatic and non-symptomatic menopausal group.
3. According to plasma E2 FSH & LH levels, there were no statistically significant correlation in STAI & BDI.
In conclusion, there was no correlation between plasma hormone levels and psychological strains and we cannot clinically applicate with hormone levels. But there was positive evidence that all menopause women have a psychological instability.
Also,
the
more psychiatric evaluation is necessary for postmenopausal women according to demographic factors during the evaluation and hormonal replacement therapy.
